Additional Beach Amenities Coming PDF Print E-mail

December 2009

In 2008-09, several projects were completed which substantially improved our beach facilities, including the addition of beautiful stone walls and associated landscaping. More shaded tables were added to support our picnickers, and, of course, the oval stone fire pit was dug so our members could enjoy our lake later in the night, and later in the year.

Surveys of our membership however, point to one missing element at the beach – bathrooms. The homeowners association, in response to this, placed a port-o-potty at the beach. However, those of you who have used this "facility" in mid-summer are aware that it's not the experience we would prefer. Also, there are no sinks, changing tables or other amenities normally found in bathrooms seen at other private or public community areas. Frankly, our members deserve a higher standard of hygiene than what's being provided.

In 2010, we plan to construct "real bathrooms". The BLHA board voted this month to move forward with the analysis phase of the project, and a formal vote for funding will be taken at the January 2010 annual meeting.

Thus far, our analysis has revealed concerns from several members associated with installing these bathrooms on a septic system. Concerns include ground water seepage into the lake, and proximity of the septic drain lines to the recreational area. So, in response to our members, we propose to connect our bathrooms to the sewer line that was installed several years ago on the northwest side of North Berkeley Lake Road. Although this is a more expensive route, it is also the most environmentally responsible position to protect our lake and our members. Final plans and costs will be presented during the annual meeting.

In addition to the bathrooms, we are also researching the ability of replacing the temporary canvas pavilion with an upgraded structure that supports our community in a way it deserves. Many homeowners have expressed their displeasure with the temporary and unsightly nature of the pavilion, and would appreciate a place where they can picnic or rest more comfortably.

Many of you are aware that our homeowner's dues are very low compared to most neighborhood associations, especially considering we have an 88-acre natural "swimming pool" to support. So, plan on hearing more about how homeowners and members can contribute to BLHA's effort to fund these new and desired amenities. We all need to contribute to the future of our lake, our facilities and our home values.
