The Berkeley Lake Fishing Club and BLHA together raised a total of $3,000 ($1500 each) for the purchase of baitfish for our lake. Approximately 28,000-30,000 shad were stocked within our lake in June. The plan is for the shad to spawn and for the bass to have a renewable food source in the lake. Literally our bass are starving to death. Most of the bass caught within our lake are 50-60% of the weight they should be, mainly due to an overpopulation of bass and the lack of an available food source. Therefore we recommend continuing to remove bass under 15–16 inches, as well as continuing to stock threadfin shad as a food source. We have removed about 400 pounds of bass this year and need to continue this trend with higher numbers.

The second fishing tournament of the year seemed to be more of a celebrity look-a-like event than a fishing tournament. Justin Galliger, with his big white cowboy hat, did an outstanding impression of country music star Kenny Chesney. A look-a- like for Renee Zellweger was unable to be found for comment. Layne Swafford, did a marvelous impression of actor and Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger. We are all still amazed how he made those muscles look so real! Fred and Niko Adler (guests of the Hunkapiller's) did a poor impression of fishermen since they didn't even land a single fish. As far as the fishing goes, Tom Dyer and grandson Henry Newlin won the tournament with 4 fish weighing in at 5.6 pounds. Henry Newlin won youth big fish with a bass that weighed 2.14 pounds and Wes Waxweiler won Adult Big Fish with a 2.15 pound bass. The rest of the motley crew can be found in the accompanying table.

The next scheduled fishing tournament is Saturday September 9, 2006 at 7 am. Trophies for Heaviest Stringer from all three events and Adult Big Fish will be given out after the tournament.
