State of the Lake and Fishing Report PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill Hunkapiller
March 2007

By the time this report hits the press the lake will be returning to full pool and the construction and repairs should be almost complete. It's been interesting seeing the lake with this water level and I'm glad to say that I really didn't see as much trash in the lake as I was expecting.

This year I will be asking for assistance for someone who has the time to take water quality samples and deliver them to a local lab a few miles away in Norcross. We are all busy and I do not want to make excuses but it has been difficult for me to get water samples during the week with my work and travel schedule. So I am asking for a volunteer to run water samples so our lab can test for Fecal Chloroform levels between the first week of May until Labor Day weekend in September. Any volunteers please contact me at home, 770.242.1282 or via email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Your help is greatly appreciated.

I will be working with our lake biologist, Shan, at ProPonds again this year and we will most likely continue the fertilization process in the spring to produce the non-harmful algae bloom which will turn the lake a green hue. This is important to keep light from reaching the lake bottom and producing submergent vegetation, a.k.a. weeds, that will overtake the lake. Truth be told with the low water levels at present time I would expect that any weeds would dry up and die, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Again, we ask all homeowners not to introduce any aquatic plants in the lake.

Spring is upon us, fishing, swimming and boating are all just around the corner. So get ready, Lake Berkeley is going to be beautiful again in 2007.

Fishing Report

I honestly have to confess that I lost the results of the last 2006 fishing tournament. I do know that Randy Johnson won the 3rd tournament but Tom Dyer came out overall for 2006 as the top angler of the year. I will continue to search for these results, and will probably ask for someone to help keep a copy of the results after each tournament in case my organizational skills fail us once again.

2007 will be another great year of fishing. I'm glad to report that the Berkeley Lake Fishing Club and BLHA together have raised enough money to stock about 50,000 shad in our lake. As you know, we are trying to reduce the overpopulation of bass in the lake and increase shad, for bass and crappie's forage. This year again we plan on raising money through the tournaments for shad stocking. I will be contacting many of the fishermen on the lake to discuss our goals and objectives for 2007 and how we can help make the fishing club a little more organized. I'm expecting this meeting to be in early to mid March and I will contact everyone directly. Below are the dates for the fishing tournaments. Please let me know your thoughts and we'll be in touch soon. If you are interested in fishing in the tournaments or being included in the fishing club's meeting, please contact me at 770.242.1282 or via email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
