December 2007

As 2007 comes to an end here at Berkeley Lake, it is a good time to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in this unique community. This is particularly apparent when I return from a business trip or family visit and drive back into our scenic sanctuary. I can't help but marvel how lucky we are to call this home.

I know we all want to preserve the natural beauty and character of this special neighborhood. The two main components that distinguish our City are the lake and the people. As we recognize, this year especially, a healthy lake requires rain to feed the streams and springs that replenish its waters. Likewise as stewards of the lake, the BLHA needs a steady inflow of members, leaders and volunteers.

This past year set records for the lowest measurements of precipitation and yet the BLHA set records for the highest levels of participation. We had the largest number of members, peak attendance at the events and greatest number of volunteer hours donated. It was a year noted for numerous activities (movies, campouts, cook offs) and building projects.

Moving into next year, we know that we cannot affect rainfall, however, we can sustain the flow of membership and contributions that keep the homeowners association healthy. The upcoming board has great plans for continued investment in facilities and ample opportunity for your involvement. A number of projects are planned and we will be looking for input and support. This will be an important time for you to speak up and pitch in.

You have or will be receiving a membership letter in the mail. Please fill these out promptly. We would like to meet our membership goals early. At the annual meeting, on January 12, the membership will vote on approval of the 2008 Board of Directors and Budget. In addition, a number of capital improvement projects will be discussed and funding will be proposed. You must join for 2008 in order to vote on these motions.

In recognition of the accomplishments of this year and anticipation of even greater things to come next year, we expect a strong response to the membership initiative and a big turnout at the January meeting. I look forward to seeing you there.
